DISCOVER ALOE VERA
Dr. K.C. Thriveni BAMS
This was the information Mahatma Gandhi gave his biographer on asking what were his secret forces which sustained him during his long fasts.
Arab traders were probably responsible for Aloe Vera’s spread into Persia, India and the Far East. The name “Aloe” was derived from the Arabic word ‘Alloeh’ meaning ‘shining bitter substance’ because of the bitter liquid found in the leaves. ‘Vera’ was later added to it in order to distinguish from the most popular used species of Aloe - Aloe Barbadensis Miller, from the rest. Vera means ‘true’ in Latin.

ICD-10 DIAGNOSTIC CODES
SOUTH AFRICA MAY APPROVE AYURVEDA
Dr RD Hiralall BAMS South Africa
A request from South Africa is to consult with countries that are working on or have implemented ICD-10 Diagnostic/ Procedure Codes for Ayurveda. To our knowledge South Africa will be one of the first country that ICD-10 diagnostic / procedure codes are being implemented for Ayurveda as part of the legislative requirements. The SA Medical Association Facilities, i.e. General Medical Practitioners and Specialists have implemented this system 2005/2006 as of the regularity requirements.
The National Ayurveda Medical Association of South Africa is in the interim preparing the necessary documents for submission to the South African National Department of Health and Council of Medical Schemes. Our skin is the largest organ of our body though we are not aware of it. It is very sensitive to the touch therapy, particularly to the Abhyanga with powder, oil, aromas or just to the gentle touch.

Dr S.AJIT BAMS, PCAS

Each of us, despite our often busy and stressful lifestyles, aspire to live healthy & happy and we go about this in a number of ways. Some of us fight with numerous machines in modern gyms or run kilometres every day no matter what the weather. Some feel that perfect health can only be maintained by eating organic or super organic food or by eating only raw vegetables or drinking 2-3 litres of water. Finally some believe the claims of the most recent dietary or herbal supplement promoters that promises optimal health.
However the reality is that in spite of these practices and the new theories that arise every day that promise perfect health, most of us feel that the achievement of a healthy & happy life is just a dream. Have we ever thought about this ?

Dr. M. Surekha,
Pankajakasthuri,
Medical college,
Trivandrum
“Lifestyle disorders” is a term frequently heard these days, which refers to a set of diseases that occur due to present day lifestyles of people, the changes in the normal routines and health practices. Compared to the past, thanks to the modernization, life has become more stressful and mechanical. This holds good for the people belonging to all walks of life. They have to compete with others at their respective social, economical, educational and professional fronts. In the race for existence, money, power and position, the most neglected or ignored part of life is “the health”. Undue competition leads to stress. Stress causes derangement of body’s internal environment leading to diseases. Sedentary habits, over eating, untimely food, odd hours of work also adds up to the situation and leads to diseases like Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity, hormone dysfunction, dyslipidaemia and so on. These conditions can be prevented by modifying our lifestyles, making changes which would counter the formation of diseases. Hence these are modifiable factors.
